Overview
The ‘Eternal City’ may be the ultimate city break destination - with thousands of years of history within easy walking distance and a city centre that is packed with art galleries, museums and beautiful fountains. The restaurants are world class, the nightlife vibrant and there’s plenty of shopping too for shoes, leatherware and fashion items. For thousands of years merchants and pilgrims have flocked to the city - built on seven hills along the banks of the Tiber. Rome has arguably the richest cultural history of any city, thanks to its having been at the heart of the world's greatest Empire. Its significance as a religious and cultural centre, its turbulent centuries of aristocratic and papal rivalries combined with some of the finest art and architecture, such as the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City, make it a fascinating place to visit.
Rome is far from a museum though: it has a colourful and throbbing heart and traffic pushes its way along the city’s roads. But you can easily escape into the myriad of narrow streets where you’ll find some of the country’s best restaurants and markets. Look out for the famous Barberini pastry shop or the Volpetti cheese shop where they stock 150 local cheeses. A visit to the Testaccio area is a must for Foodies: thought to be the birthplace of Roman cuisine you’ll now find authentic Gelateria, where artisan gelato has been made for over a century.
Finally, don’t miss the Campo de Fiori’s piazza, which hosts a superb fruit, vegetable and fish market – it’s a wonderfully relaxing place to sit and watch the world go by whilst locals go about their everyday lives. From small noisy rooms where you can enjoy steaming plates of pasta, to designer spaces for seeing and being seen, Rome's restaurants outnumber any other type of business in the city. We can arrange for you to make some of your own pasta, eat it that evening and even take some home to share with friends.
Finally, if you fancy exploring the area just outside the City too, there are many interesting destinations from beaches to archaeological sites to choose from. On a hot summer day relaxing in the fresh air of the nearby hills may be just what you need. Our Special Offers for Rome include flights and hotels. We have plenty of options from B&B to luxury accommodation, so please just choose the one that best suits you.
